Seis am Schlern / Kastelruth
Medium altitude plateau beneath the Schlern
Life here on this medium elevation plateau is dominated by the Schlern mountain.
Seis am Schlern: Over time this area of scattered farmsteads and stately houses owned by the Burghers of Bolzano built during the Belle Èpoque developed into one of Tyrol’s major holiday resorts for the great and the good of Europe. A century ago regular visitors included Europe’s top royals. Today Seis is a quiet village in the heart of the Dolomites. The best place to savour the scenery is the lower inn reached along the Söller trail where the free-standing Santner-Spitze pinnacle can be seen beyond the red tower of the old Mariahilf church. Seis also boasts an 18-hole golf course and Europe’s vastest expanse of Alpine pastureland, the Seiser Alm straddling the 7,000 foot elevation line, can be reached from here by gondola lift in just 13 minutes.
Kastelruth: noted for its quaint houses often featuring stylish facade paintings and bay windows. In 1670 a crucifixion group was erected on the hilltop site of the former castle. The annual Corpus Christi procession is truly unforgettable, with local people in colourful Tyrolean costume.
