South Tyrol is Italy’s northernmost province and with the neighbouring province of Trento forms the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol. More than two-thirds of the population speak German as their first language, over a quarter belong to the Italian ethnic group, and around 18,000 South Tyroleans speak Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romance language once far more widely diffused in the southern Alps which has survived in the seclusion of the Dolomite valleys
